St Bart's Church
The Vine
At The Vine Sheffield we are working to transform our community garden into a thriving space where people can rest, reflect, connect and share.
We will be undertaking major development work such as building beds and creating a seating area, helping the garden to feel welcoming and accessible for all. This will create new opportunities for local people to gather, share skills and grow produce, improving the environment for everyone. By planting native perennials, seasonal edibles and building bug hotels, we’ll also enable local wildlife to thrive.
The Vine is a small church in an urban area of Sheffield, committed to learning, sharing our faith and meeting the needs of the local community in practical ways. Activities in the garden are interwoven in the life of the church and local community; through outdoor services, post-church picnics and a midweek ‘Welcome Space’ where members engage in gardening, games and crafts. We are intentional in our approach to sustainability, reflected in our Eco Church working group and ‘Bronze award’ status
The church and surrounding garden sit within a housing estate where there are high levels of social isolation and poverty. Our vision is for the garden to provide a peaceful space for reflection, as well as opportunities for connection and improved health and wellbeing. At a recent open day, members of the community gave feedback that the priorities for them within the green space were learning & skills and supporting wildlife & biodiversity. People enjoyed exploring the garden and shared their ideas for development, which included a sensory area, growing wildflowers and regular social groups within the garden space.
During the winter of 2025-26, we will be building a seating area and new raised beds, working on stablising paths and flooring, installing a greenhouse and setting up a new composting area. We’ll also be working on improving the biodiversity by planting fruit trees, perennials and native shrubs. All with a goal of enabling new weekly gardening groups to start up in Spring 2026, run by volunteers. We’re grateful to Westhill Endowment for the opportunity to get this project off the ground.
