Northumbrian Industrial Mission
Workplace Wellbeing
Our Story and Mission:
For more than fifty years, Northumbrian Industrial Mission Ltd (NIM) has served the people of the North East of England by providing professional, confidential and compassionate ecumenical chaplaincy in the workplace. From heavy industry and shipyards in the 1970s to today’s diverse mix of Emergency Services, Government Offices, Farmers’ Mart, retail, transport hubs, and veterinary practices. Our chaplains have walked alongside employees and employers, listening, supporting, and offering Christian care and presence in times of both challenge and celebration.
The North East faces challenging social and economic issues with some of the areas we serve in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham being in the top 10% of the most deprived areas of the country.
NIM’s chaplains (the majority of whom are volunteers) see many who experience the consequences of this on a daily basis. They witness high levels of insecurity and stress within the workplaces they visit – with many employees uncertain about how funding cuts and reducing budgets will affect them and their livelihoods.
Within this challenging context, NIM provides a unique resource of care and concern. Our chaplains value and ‘see’ the individuals behind the statistics, providing hope in difficult times and responding to human need by loving service. Many people have found that talking over their concerns (and joys) with someone they trust, can give them a different perspective, often stopping the problem becoming more serious.
Chaplains also signpost to other professional agencies when this is necessary. We are available for everyone - of all faiths and beliefs, offering independent and confidential support for workplace and more personal issues.
An important element of this project will be to work with the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) to provide chaplaincy support for its workforce of over 2,700 staff and volunteers who provide care for the people of our region. The nature of work undertaken by ambulance and paramedic teams is very stressful and their daily work often takes them into difficult situations - physically, emotionally and spiritually - and at times they need extra care and support for themselves. This is an environment where the independent and confidential support of our volunteers can be of real help.
