Exploring Faith and Diversity Through Art

* Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education

Children from seven Sunderland primary schools will take part in Exploring Faith and Diversity through Art, a creative project that helps pupils discover and reflect on different faiths. Led by local Sunderland artist Kerry Cook from The Art Room Sunderland, the workshops will use a range of artistic media to bring to life symbols, stories and practices from diverse religious traditions.

Pupils will create both individual and collaborative artworks which will be showcased in a public exhibition for families and the wider community. The project celebrates diversity, builds understanding and gives children a platform to share their voices and perspectives through art.

Sunderland SACRE is launching Exploring Faith and Diversity through Art, a project that brings together seven local primary schools to learn about different faiths in creative and engaging ways.

Working in partnership with local Sunderland artist Kerry Cook from The Art Room Sunderland, pupils will take part in a series of hands-on workshops exploring religious symbols, stories and practices. Through painting, clay, print and textiles children will reflect on what faith and diversity mean to them, producing both individual and group pieces that capture their learning and imagination. The workshops will take place in the schools during June 2026.

The project will culminate in a public exhibition providing a platform for children to share their work with families, schools and the wider community. Alongside celebrating the city’s cultural richness, the exhibition will encourage conversations about diversity, understanding and respect. The project will also create resources to share with schools and SACREs nationally, ensuring its impact continues long after the exhibition closes.
