King Edward VI Foundation
Faiths in Birmingham schools filming project
The faiths in Birmingham schools filming project will create a series of mini films for schools to use when exploring some of the diverse religions found in Birmingham. The films will contain interviews, led by pupils, with various faith representatives from around the city. This is a project being led and run by the King Edward VI Foundation in Birmingham.
The King Edward VI Foundation is a diverse family of fourteen schools in Birmingham. These schools are a rare combination of independent, grammar and comprehensive schools, which have come together over the centuries since the establishment of King Edward’s School, Birmingham in 1552. All parts of the Foundation share a common purpose and work together to realise the aspiration of making Birmingham the best place to be educated in the UK.
The Religious Studies departments in the schools which form part of the King Edward VI Foundation have adopted, as their standard of quality in the subject area, the National Content Standard. This standard has six criterion which should be used to decide the content of any curriculum in RE. Contextual factors is one aspect of this standard. This requires that schools should provide opportunities for pupils to explore the local context when learning about religious and non-religious worldviews.
These films, with their focus on the diverse faiths found in Birmingham, will help schools, both within the Foundation and beyond, to realise this aspect of the National Content Standard as they will provide a means through which the local context can be explored.
