Equippers Church
Weybridge Community Hub
Weybridge Community Hub will deliver a range of inclusive, empowering and faith-inspired programmes meeting the biggest needs in our society. Through wellbeing workshops, youth mentoring, events for the socially isolated and free life-skills training, the project will build connection, confidence and compassion across all ages and backgrounds. It will promote understanding between people of all faiths, supports wellbeing and strengthens the local community through practical, creative and faith-motivated engagement.
Who, What, & Why
Based in Weybridge Surrey, at Equippers Church, we currently host and support over 1,500 people each month across our services and programmes. We continue to grow and see increased demand for our services but we are limited in what we can achieve as we have not until now owned our own venue. We currently rent a school hall on Sundays, and various smaller local venues mid-week but have reached capacity in these and we need a permanent facility which is fit for use and which can host all we can offer the local community.
The project centres on the purchase and renovation of Weybridge Hall, and its transformation into a vibrant new church home and community centre right in the heart of Weybridge.
Weybridge Hall is an historic building right in the heart of the community which has played an important role in the town’s history since it was opened in 1899. It operated first as a shop and in 1920 was converted to a cinema. In the 1950s Elmbridge Council purchased the venue and operated it as a vibrant public hall which regularly hosted events such as horticultural shows, lectures, jumble sales, film society meetings, dances, concerts and blood donor sessions. Unfortunately, financial pressure forced its closure in 2014. The building has been unoccupied since then, falling into a state of disrepair.
When renovated and restored, the venue will provide a fantastic facility for a church and community centre given its prominent position at the heart of Weybridge High Street. The prospect of restoring this historic site to its former glory for our church and community really excites us.
Westhill Endowment are helping us with the purchase of furnishings and equipment for the Hub rooms which will enable us to deliver these inclusive, empowering, and faith-inspired programmes, in order to meet the biggest needs in our community.
