Dear God...

Images That Speak

Our project aims to create a professional photograph pack working with a professional photographer, Mark Pemberton*.

This photo pack will reflect the diverse nature of our local communities as a rich resource for the teaching of RE in this area, as well as to provide a contrasting location for those teaching in other areas of the UK.

The digital photo pack will include professional photographs taken which collate the places of worship in our locality, synonymous with local communal worldviews (such as faith communities).

These images will also document local themes of ‘peace’ and ‘reconciliation’, through telling the story of how places of worship came to be here through rich immigration and compassionate community development (such as the Coventry Religious Square Mile/Coventry Sacred Space which will be featured in the photo pack).

Our digital photo pack will support the resourcing of our new local agreed syllabus, due for implementation from September 2024.

The objectives for our new Agreed Syllabus are to ensure pupils across EYFS and Key Stages 1 – 3 gain an in-depth knowledge and a clear understanding of both religious and non-religious worldviews through a multidisciplinary approach utilising theology, philosophy and ethics, sociology and historical perspectives, which also incorporate the local themes of peace and reconciliation.

Our new syllabus envisages the RE curriculum as a journey and as such the plans for units are assembled as maps; the next step on the journey.

The photo pack will provide students with those much-needed images of the worldviews they have visited, explored and studied along the way.

Whilst not intended to replace visits, the images will enhance these experiences and ensure students who cannot visit still get insights into these significant places and the communal worldviews that are expressed within and beyond them.

Notes accompanying each image will support teachers and pupils in developing their understanding of the communal worldviews held by members of that particular place of worship, to include important beliefs, regular community rituals and practices and the work of the faith community in the local community in response to their communal worldview.

Through the photo pack, pupils will discover that each faith community and place of worship is a unique expression of an organised worldview and that faith is embodied in unique ways in different locations.
