Baby Basics
At Baby Basics Leicester, run by Church of the Martyrs, fulfil referrals made by health professionals for practical support for new families with the essentials they need to bring up a new baby or young child. It does this by supporting families who are struggling, for various reasons, to meet the financial and practical demands of having a new baby.
What do Baby Basics Leicester do:
- Work closely with agents of Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council, health professionals and local charities to identify those in need;
- Provide a safe place to sleep (a Moses basket or cot with bedding) and the essential items to ensure the baby’s well being e.g. clothes, nappies, blankets, towels, baby toiletries, etc;
- Give essential items to support the new mothers’ well being in order that they feel cared for and valued e.g. toiletries and personal hygiene items, maternity clothes;
- Source larger items of equipment where required, such as, buggies, cots and highchairs;
- Give clothes, toys and books to toddlers (up to 5 Years old) to support their growth and development.
Our "Out and About" project:
Although we rely on good quality pre-loved items to redistribute to those in need, our donations do not keep up with the demand for larger items such as cots and buggies. We often have over 20 families on our waiting list for a double buggy; items we rarely get donated. Families are left isolated and not able to get to appointments, the shops or even take their child to nursery as it is unsafe for them to leave the home without a double buggy.
Our ‘Out and About’ project will enable us to purchase more double buggies and distribute them to those on our waiting list which will improve families well-being, mental health and quality of life.

‘Thank you so much for providing me with a double buggy. I have 3 children under 5 and I can now get out to do my shopping or school run without my son running off or the baby being carried. It has made such a difference to my confidence.’
