Ark and Anchor

Ark and Anchor CIC delivers "Shattering the Shackles of Shame / Healing from Soul Wounds", a gentle, faith-rooted recovery journey for people carrying shame, trauma, addiction, abuse, grief, rejection or life-controlling struggles.

Through trauma-aware group sessions, guided reflection, journaling, creative activities and safe conversation, participants are supported to process pain, rebuild identity, strengthen resilience and discover hope. The project creates compassionate spaces where people can feel seen, valued and no longer defined by their past, taking meaningful steps towards healing, freedom and renewed purpose.

Who we are:

Ark and Anchor CIC is a faith-rooted community interest company created to support people on a journey of healing, recovery and renewed purpose. We work with people in a variety of community settings, from a wide range of backgrounds, including those who have experienced homelessness, addiction, adverse childhood experiences, family breakdown, crisis, offending histories, mental health struggles, trauma and shame.

Our name reflects the heart of our work. An ark represents safety, shelter and protection in the storm, while an anchor represents hope, stability and something secure to hold onto when life feels uncertain. Through our work, we seek to provide both: a safe harbour where people can begin to heal, and a steady source of encouragement as they take steps towards freedom, restoration and connection.

What we do:

Through our Safe Harbour Programme, Ark and Anchor CIC delivers Shattering the Shackles of Shame and Healing from Soul Wounds — a gentle, trauma-aware and faith-rooted recovery journey for people carrying deep emotional, relational and spiritual wounds. Soul wounds are the inner injuries caused by painful life experiences such as rejection, abandonment, abuse, grief, betrayal, shame, neglect or repeated experiences of not feeling safe, seen, loved or valued.

These wounds can shape how people see themselves, others, God and the world around them. They may appear as low self-worth, fear, anxiety, anger, addiction, isolation, self-sabotage, unhealthy relationships or a constant sense of living in survival mode. Our programme helps participants begin to understand the impact of shame and trauma, recognise the beliefs and survival patterns attached to their pain, and gently explore a pathway towards healing, dignity and renewed identity.

The Safe Harbour Programme includes guided reflection, journaling, creative activities, group conversation, gentle teaching and opportunities for personal response. Participants are supported to revisit their stories at their own pace, without pressure or judgement, in an environment where they can feel safe, protected, heard and valued. The aim is not to force people to relive painful experiences, but to walk alongside them as they begin to process their past, rebuild resilience and move towards hope, freedom and restoration.

Our Approach:

Our approach is compassionate, person-centred, trauma-aware and informed by Polyvagal Theory, which helps participants understand how trauma affects the nervous system. Many people who have experienced trauma live in a state of survival, where the body is constantly preparing to fight, flee, freeze or shut down. By helping people recognise these responses, we support them to understand that they are not broken or weak; their bodies have often been trying to protect them.

Within a safe and supportive group environment, participants are gently helped to learn how to re-regulate when difficult emotions, memories or body responses arise. This may include grounding practices, breath awareness, journaling, creativity, safe connection, reflection and noticing what helps them return to a sense of calm, safety and presence. We walk alongside each person carefully, allowing them to move at their own pace and remain connected to the present as they explore past pain.

A key part of our approach is the introduction of glimmers — small moments that bring a sense of peace, gratitude, joy, hope or safety. These may be simple things such as a warm drink, a kind word, sunlight, music, prayer, nature, creativity or feeling heard by another person. For people who have lived in survival mode, noticing glimmers can help retrain the mind and body to recognise safety and connection. Through this, participants are encouraged to acknowledge the little things they are grateful for and begin moving from survival towards hope, belonging and a deeper connection with themselves, others and spirit.

At the heart of the Safe Harbour Programme is a whole-person-centred approach to healing, recognising that trauma, shame and life-controlling struggles do not affect only one part of a person. Pain can impact the body, soul and spirit, shaping how people feel, think, respond, relate and understand their identity. Our programme supports the gentle realignment of body, soul and spirit by helping participants learn to re-regulate their nervous system, process emotional and relational wounds, and consider a deeper connection with faith, hope and purpose. Through safety, reflection, glimmers, gratitude and supportive community, participants are encouraged to move from survival towards recovery, where they can outwork their healing from a place of dignity, moving into restoration for themselves, their families and their wider communities.
