Pause for Thought in the Classroom

For many children, school assembly/collective act of worship provides their only opportunity for spiritual reflection and a chance to think about their own beliefs, relationships with others and place in the world.

Our project supports teachers and visiting church leaders who lead collective worship in schools in providing the very best learning experience for the children through our free resource website www.assemblies.org.uk .

The project is coordinated by Rebecca Parkinson who has over 25 years teaching experience and has been site editor for the past 5 years.

The impact

The project makes a real difference to the lives of teachers, church leaders and students and we frequently get feedback explaining how the site has enabled the teaching of the Christian faith and the challenge of changing lives.

“Thank you for keeping the Assemblies site fresh and current and adapted to meet our needs as a school. It is greatly appreciated.”.

We also know that as students experience many months of disrupted education there will be a real need for space to share worries, to reflect on what has happened and to find hope for the future.  Teachers tell us that classroom assemblies give them the space to do this:

“Thank you so much. I am planning assemblies…with a well-being theme - the assemblies are fantastic”.

Our site has a far-reaching impact - in 2019 we received over 6.5 million page requests and even during lockdown we received 350,000+ views as teachers, parents and church leaders needed content for collective worship and reflection online.

Covid-19

Latest government guidance on making schools safe advises that schools should avoid large gatherings such as assemblies or collective worship, therefore, rather than one teacher delivering a whole school session, every teacher will need to be equipped to provide this important moment of reflection for their own class, every day.

There will be many more teachers needing to find out how they can deliver a high-quality session to support their students and searching for something ready to take ‘off the shelf’ for immediate use.

“We are aware that there will be many changes when children arrive back at school...With this in mind we are grateful for any input that will help us in the role of helping children think through the issues and changes from recent months.
Classroom based reflections will help us greatly in this process.”   Primary School Teacher
