Dear God...

Rising Global Peace Forum

RISING promotes new ways to provoke dialogue around peace. RISING is a three way partnership between The Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations (Coventry University), Coventry City Council and Coventry Cathedral.

We deliver regular lectures and symposia and have a strong online presence for discussion of current world peace issues.

RISING culminates in an annual Global Peace Forum, held in Coventry. Through a combination of key note speeches from high calibre speakers, seminars and workshops, RISING Global Peace Forum provides an excellent opportunity for dialogue and exchanging ideas on peace.

This year the theme for our global peace forum is ‘The Ecosystem of Peace’; how top-down political decisions, and bottom-up civic actions (and external factors) interconnect – as groups, communities and countries – to make us more secure. The 2019 event took place over three days, 13th-15th November, and was hosted in Coventry Cathedral.

The speaker line-up included influential figures from important areas of peace building, at a national and international level. The programme is designed to cover a wide range of issues involved in ensuring peaceful communities.

To look at the role of women and leadership we had former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, the current Chair of the Institute for Women’s Leadership, based at King’s College London.

Famed for her 2013 speech in calling out misogyny within Parliament, she currently hosts a fascinating podcast, putting the spotlight on women in leadership from all walks of life. Find ‘A Podcast of One’s Own with Julia Gillard’ here.

On the importance of considering the environment for ensuring peaceful communities we had a keynote address from Paul Allen, director of the Centre for Alternative Energy. There was also a participatory workshop Roger Harrabin (BBC environment analyst), Harriet Lamb (CEO of Ashden) and Jess Northey (from the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations).

Former Danish Prime Minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, who joined us to explore the role of children in the ecosystem of peace, as the former head of Save the Children International. With a vast wealth of experience in international relations we are privileged to hear her speak.

Thanks to the support of Westhill Trust this event is also open to sixth formers to attend.
