Dear God...

King David Primary School

Mural Project

King David Primary School is an Orthodox Jewish Primary School in Birmingham with a diverse intake of around 250 pupils, most of whom are of the Muslim faith.

The school brings together families and promotes understanding, cooperation and harmony.

Ideas began for our mural project in 2018 when the PTA funded new render for the long playground wall to create a smooth and stable surface.

The wall however looked dull and uninspiring so during 2019, a small group of parents began to consider design options, and in collaboration with the school arts coordinator and other staff agreed on a values-led concept.

We agreed that the 7 sections of the wall should represent the following 7 school values: Environment, Friendship, Community, Kindness, Respect, Resilience and Aspirations.

To create the designs each class from Reception to Y6 were then given one of the values and asked to come up with ideas … and this led finally to our 7 agreed designs.

We considered whether parents could undertake the mural painting but we didn’t have the skills between us for this. We hoped therefore to fundraise at our summer fair and through other activities so that we could pay mural artists.

Then of course, in early 2020, Covid-19 turned life on its head and prevented our fundraising activities.

This was when we applied to Westhill, and we are so grateful for their support and funding which has enabled us to employ the skills of Simon & Sheba Cassini (details in the links) so these designs could be brought to life during October of 2021.

Due to the length of time since the children created their designs, activities were run in school to help them re-engage with the ideas, designs and values.

The children were also invited to watch the mural artists at work, so they were able to deepen their understanding of the creative process and be encouraged to take care of the mural.

At the end of October 2021 we launched the wall with the whole school, teachers, parents and representatives from Westhill Endowment, with speeches, singing and the cutting of the ribbon.

The mural brings a colourful representation of our shared values to the playground, where the whole school community gathers twice a day. It reminds us daily of the values that unite us.
