Barking and Dagenham Sacre
Celebrating Diversity 

Barking and Dagenham SACRE (Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education) applied for a grant from Westhill through NASACRE to put on some opportunities to bring schools and pupils together to learn more about religions and worldviews. SACREs work in a local authority is to try and support schools to develop high quality RE in their classrooms. The SACRE, which is made up of local teachers, councillors and representatives from religions and worldviews, thought about how we could model high quality RE and support teachers in their teaching of RE. We then devise our project which further details can be found below:
 
Our project will:
 

- Organise five inter-faith one-day conferences for summer term 2021. Each for 4 primary schools (so a total of 20 schools and 160 year 5 pupils would attend) using Barking and Dagenham’s RE advisor to lead these days and to train up 4 lead teachers who could take forward these days in the next academic year; 

- The KS2 conferences would seek to give pupils first-hand experience of different religions and world views through meeting adult members of B&D SACRE’s so they can learn more about religious and world views beliefs and practices. Our theme for the day conference will be ‘Hope’; 

- To provide 3 CPD days where local teachers can meet local faith leaders and learn about different religions in the spring term. These days will build teachers subject knowledge around religions and world views and allow them to be clearer on similarities and differences.

We believe that this project will:
 
- Promote dialogue between pupils of differing faiths (and those of none) around diversity of beliefs and how these encounters can help to celebrate diversity. This will help to develop skills of tolerance and respect; 

- Achieve community benefit, as the project flows from the interests of adult SACRE members in Barking and Dagenham who want to see their SACRE become more active in supporting schools around the teaching of RE;

- Initiate a model of schools meeting together in Barking and Dagenham and begin to train a team of lead teachers in RE to help deliver inspirational RE into B&D schools 

- Give adult SACRE three benefits: A) it’s faith representatives will be contacted to be part of the one-day conferences to be part of panel discussions – giving them an experience of working alongside primary pupils. B) SACRE members will be invited to attend the teacher CPD days, where they will visit different places of worship which will allow SACRE members to become known to schools; C) A strengthen the voice of SACRE within the LA.

Break down barriers constructed through ignorance and fear of the unknown, and challenge the resulting stereotypes which emerge in popular culture around religion.
