Let The Needle Do The Talking
Meaningful textiles by embroiderer and textile artist Pamela Pavitt
The ‘Grant in Kind’ centres on a series of needlework artpieces. They are generally loaned free of charge to religious and suitable educational and community organisations such as cathedrals, churches, hospices, medical schools, hospitals and public art galleries.
Meaningful textiles are presented in two groups one dealing with ideas of peace and reconcilliation, and the other the stewardship of the world we live in, creation and the environment.
Peace and Reconciliation (18 frames - 25 textiles) and Creation and the Environment (20 frames - 31 textiles) may be loaned either as distinct groupings, or as a combined exhibition. It is also possible to customise your own exhibition by combining a selection of embroideries from both groups. There are brief titles to each embroidery, and visitors are encouraged to make their own interpretations.
It sounds a little mechanical but generally we find ourselves in discussion with exhibition organisers from a very early stage and giving broad advice on how to get the best from the resource. A rolling review of all meaningful textiles is given below and more details are available in the Running an Exhibition - details of frame sizes.
The Story Behind Let The Needle Do the Talking
Meaningful Textiles by embroiderer and textile artist Pamela Pavitt
Pamela Pavitt trained at the art school in Bromley and taught textiles
in London before returning to Bromley Art School as a member of staff.
Subsequently she was a tutor in Croydon for ten years running City and
Guilds embroidery courses.
Pamela is a member of the Embroiders’ Guild and the South London
Textile Workshop which experiments with tapestry weaving and other
techniques. Her work has been shown in Churches and Cathedrals and is
familiar through reproduction
in such publications as “Leaves from the Tree of Peace”,
“Threads of Creation” and “What a World”.
Pamela is an Elder of the United Reformed Church.
Throughout Pamela has been a firm advocate of letting the “Needle
do the Talking” and letting “Meaningful Embroideries
encourage thought and response from others”.
Smaller Exhibitions and Workshops
An Exploration on a Smaller Scale
Sometimes a full exhibition is not appropriate and people who wish to explore the intricacy of these pieces in smaller groups can have access to a small set of works.
Running an Exhibition or Workshop
Timing and Support
To check the availability of any needlework art pieces and to have an initial discussion on receiving a Grant in Kind to run your own exhibition or workshop, please email us here. or contact us here.
As there have been many exhibitions over the previous years it is most likely that we could put you in touch with a past exhibitor who has experience of running an exhibition that is relevant to you.
