Shropshire SACRE
Diversity in Collective Worship

Project in Progress

Between 2012 and 2015 Shropshire SACRE carried out a survey of primary schools to determine the situation regarding the provision of RE and collective worship in relevant schools. A key finding from the collective worship survey was that our primary schools were finding it a challenge to meet the requirement to provide acts of worship other than Christianity. In order to provide support to meet this need SACRE decided to draw up a bid using its members from other religions and belief systems and also to link with the two Inter Faith network groups currently in Shropshire. The technical expertise has been provided by staff and students in the Creative Media department at Shrewsbury College.

The aim is to provide outline materials in the form of a video and accompanying supporting notes for teachers for acts of worship in Baha’ism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Humanism, Islam Judaism and Sikhism. Our initial aim is for two from each covering primary, infant and junior ages and exploring festivals or themes appropriate to the age of the children. These will be made available to all Shropshire schools and to any schools in the country who may wish to use them. We hope also that the groups represented on SACRE and the Inter Faith network groups will also use them as discussion points in their respective forums.
