Translation into Polish of Restored Church Action Packs for Ending Domestic Abuse Training

1 in 4 women in the UK experiences domestic abuse and over 1600 a week are raped. In 2014-15 alone, 8.2% of women (1.3 million) reported having experienced domestic abuse. Rape increased by 41% to 29,234 offences, and other sexual offences increased by 35% to 58,872 offences, the highest levels on record (ONS 2016).

Restored aims to help end violence against women (VAW) by working with churches of all denominations, Christian individuals and organisations. We make them aware of the issue, and challenge and equip them to be agents of change.

For this particular project we want to develop a Church Action Pack for Polish-speaking Christians and churches, to help them address domestic abuse within their communities.

There are 853,000 Polish people residing in the UK, up from just 58,000 in 2002. 1 in 4 women in the UK experiences domestic abuse, but in Polish communities the incidence may be much higher. For example, in the London Borough of Haringey, Poles represent 4.3% of the local population but 15.1% of domestic abuse victims. But many Poles do not know what support is available to them because of the language and cultural barriers.

The Catholic Church is enormously influential within Polish communities. 92.2% of Poles say they are Catholic, and 50-60% attend mass. So we want to equip Polish Catholic churches to take action – to speak out against the attitudes that perpetuate domestic abuse, and help survivors to get the support they need.

To do this, we plan to develop a Church Action Pack in Polish, for use by churches ministering to Polish people living in the UK, and also those living in Poland.
