FACES:
Faiths Against Child Sexual Exploitation

FACES (Faiths Against Child Sexual Exploitation) is a group of concerned Christians and Muslims from Luton who came together in 2016 to respond to the issue of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE). We seek to help safeguard the community by addressing misconceptions through quality training, support victim engagement work and be a strong united voice communicating that CSE will not be tolerated.

As people of faith we have been disturbed by suggestions that sexual exploitation is legitimised by religion and are aware of how stories from around the nation have portrayed cases in such a way that attack the Muslim community in particular. Research shows that victims and perpetrators of abuse are found in many different contexts, including the Church and wider community, and yet media coverage has often ignored the breadth of the problem, fuelling a narrow stereotype. If this is not challenged we do a disservice to the majority of victims, whose experiences of abuse don’t fit one particular profile – and we risk allowing fear to divide and damage our communities.

FACES seeks to mobilise people across Luton’s communities to effectively stand up against the sexual exploitation of children. Speaking out in solidarity with people of different faiths underpins our work to combat this issue and establish Luton as a model of best practice in response to CSE.
