Emmanuel Christian School

School of Drama

Emmanuel Christian School was founded over 30 years ago and our mission is to be a distinctively Christian school which is a blessing to the city of Oxford. We describe ourselves as ‘A Christian school for Oxford promoting life and learning to the full’.

Our learning together is described by seven ‘c’s: promoting the Christian faith, deepening a Christian conscience, nurturing courage, fostering humble curiosity, inviting creativity, expecting contribution to society and celebrating learning in a supportive community.

We measure the value of education not simply by levels of achievement but through the creative contribution children are equipped to make to society with a distinctive and perceptive Christian voice. Because of this, the creative arts play a significant part in our school life, expressing all that we have been learning together.

In Autumn 2018, Emmanuel Drama Club was pioneered by Abigail Felce who, before coming to Oxford, was trained in Los Angeles at Paramount Studios. The Drama Club happened after school once a week for children in the school to attend. They have produced a number of different events through the year: a play based on Michael Rosen’s Book, ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ for the school Open Day in November: an Easter performance around the theme of ‘Buried Treasure’ which included a beautiful tableau of what it means to hold treasure in jars of clay; and an improv performance at the school summer sports day.

From 2019 our desire is to expand and grow the scope of the Drama Club to become the Emmanuel School of Drama. We will take part in the Oxford Playhouse Primary Playmaker scheme, enabling children to express powerful truths in a compelling way on stage. Building on this connection with the local community, we will launch a platform for families across Oxford to join the Emmanuel School of Drama, a space where children can explore ideas of truth, beauty and goodness with honesty and courage. In this way we hope to use Drama as a powerful means to express the fullness and freedom of life which the Christian faith offers, the curiosity and creativity which it invites and in so doing make a positive contribution to the life of the city.
