Thrive Together Birmingham
Birmingham Poverty Truth Commission

The idea behind Poverty Truth Commission is that to really see change for people who are struggling with poverty, the real voices of people have experienced living life at the sharp end need to be heard, and that they need to be involved in influencing and decision making.

Thrive is helping to facilitate this process in Birmingham which begins by bringing together a group of people who have this sort of lived experience and are willing to share that story with others – at the moment we are calling this group ‘Testifiers’. We would then work with them as a group for 4-5 months to help them tell their story in a way they are comfortable with, and then together that group will put on a public event telling their stories.

At the end of this event we will bring them together with a group of Business, Civic and Faith leaders, people with influence in the city, and then together over 12-18 months they identify a few issues that they want to address and then work on them together. The hope is that this will lead to lasting change in how decisions are made that affect those struggling with poverty. This has been the experience of the Poverty Truth Commissions in other parts of the country.
