Dear God...

AfriKids Operation Smiles Our Progress: Operation Smiles has been in operation since 2005, but Sister Jane has been helping babies in her community for even longer. At first, the project was completely reactive, responding to babies who had been abandoned or whose mothers had passed away. Sister Jane would rescue babies, bring them to the Centre and nurture them back to health, providing formula milk, medical care and shelter for them to thrive and eventually be able to return home. Today, the project is both reactive and proactive, incorporating community education to increase awareness about teenage pregnancy and its catalytic effect on increasing maternal and infant mortality rates, ante and post-natal care, risks during pregnancy and the importance of enrolling their children in school. The project continues to evolve and provide the best service possible to the children in the care of Sister Jane, who is also helped out by local Sisters of Mary Immaculate who also volunteer their time. |
