Dear God...

Kids United
Our Project:

Background Information

CURBS (Children in URBan Situations) is a small national charity which provides resources, training and support for Christian urban children's workers that nurture the child's spirituality/faith and recognise developmental needs.  We had increasingly felt the need to set up models of working with children which can be replicated elsewhere, both in terms of approach - we have a very clear ethos and set of values - and in terms of developing and piloting new resources and training.

We began to do this through a project called Kids United set up in 2008 based at St Mary's Church hall, Shadwell in Tower Hamlets, East London where we ran activities for between 20 and 30 4-7 year olds during holidays. This group was run by CURBS and supported by a team of over 10 volunteers from churches and the local community.

What we hadn't anticipated was that vast majority of the children would be Muslim, most from Bangladesh (CURBS began in response to the needs of white working class families).  We therefore began exploring using themes and stories that have a common heritage in both Christianity and Islam as a basis for the club, and the children/families were very supportive of what we did.

We regularly visited all the families and had valuable conversations with Muslim parents - unpacking what we are doing, gauging their views/opinions on our work to share faith stories and openly sharing aspects of our different faith backgrounds and beliefs.
